The name "Gold Creek" is a bit misleading. While it may have been the site of the first gold discovery in the state, the gold deposits in the creek depleted quickly, and prospectors abandoned the area, leaving little more than a memory. However, Gold Creek got a second chance in the limelight when, in 1883, Henry Villard, President of the Northern Pacific Railroad, visited Gold Creek and drove the spike that completed the line that linked the east and west coasts.
