Libby Dam - Libby

Free guided tours of Libby Dam and Powerhouse are offered daily Memorial Day to Labor Day, at 10:00am, 12:00pm, 2:00pm, and 4:00pm. Tours are first come, first serve and last about 1 hour. Photo ID Required for age 18 and over. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes before tour starts. Tours start from the Visitor Center. Tours are available by appointment the rest of the year, please call (406) 293-5577 for more info.

Visitor Center Hours 9:30am-6pm daily Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is no charge for admission or for the tours. Allow about 30 minutes to view the family friendly displays and videos and visit the gift shop.

Libby Dam is located 17 miles north of the town of Libby, Montana, just 40 miles from Canada and 90 miles from Glacier National Park. Driving Directions from Libby: go north on Hwy 37, turn left on Forest Road 228, go 3.5 miles uphill to the left (West side) of the dam. Visitor Center is located in the Souse Gulch Day use area. The Souse Gulch Boat Ramp onto Lake Koocanusa, parking area and viewpoints are open year round, weather permitting.

Run by the US Army Corps of Engineers, The Libby Dam Visitor Center has new exhibits and displays for all ages to enjoy and learn about the daily delicate balancing act between competing water uses including flood damage control, hydropower production, fish, wildlife and cultural resources management and recreation, as well as the needs of other dams and communities both upstream and downstream of the dam.

The Souse Gulch Day-Use Area is open daily after the first week of May from 9am-9pm. Located on the lake behind the dam, the day-use area is immediately adjacent to the Visitor Center. The day-use area contains 46 picnic tables with a variety of shade and views, restroom facilities, sand-volleyball court, horseshoe pits and two playgrounds as well as a challenging Disc Golf Course, the Kooky-Noosa, location of the Montana State Tournament in the fall of 2013!

There are also three large shelters available for group picnics. Each shelter has 4 tables, 2 cooking grills, 2 sinks with running water and electricity. Shelter reservations can be made in advance by calling the Visitor Center at (406) 293-5577, otherwise shelter use is first-come, first-served.

Looking for more to do? Just below the dam there is a watchable wildlife area with bald eagles, osprey and more! Looking for a place to camp? There are a variety of dry campsites in Dunn Creek and Blackwell campgrounds. Located on the Kootenai River, there are some are pull-through sites, each with a fire ring and picnic table. There is no charge for camping, however there is a 14 day maximum stay limit. Each campground has a boat ramp and the Kootenai River downstream of Libby Dam is considered a "Blue Ribbon" trout stream.

The Libby Dam Visitor Center is located on the West side of the top of the dam, at 260 Souse Gulch Road. Located 3.5 miles up FR 228 from Hwy 37, or 5 miles from the Hwy 37 viewpoint, you will find multiple scenic views as you drive around below this 3,055' long dam and zigzag up 422 feet to the top!
