Named for the trees that line the nearby creek, Box Elder became important as the tribal headquarters of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation. The Indian Reservation was established in 1916 after repeated requests from Chief Rocky Boy for a solution to the problem of the large population of landless Chippewa-Cree in Montana. Today, Box Elder is home to the Chippewa Cree Tribal Council, the Northern Winz casino and Stone Child College (a more accurate translation of Chief Rocky Boy's Chippewa Cree name.) Bear Paw Ski Bowl on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation is also accessed through Box Elder.
