Toston, Montana sits on the banks of the Missouri River in between
Helena
and Three Forks on US Highway 287. Thomas Toston, the town's first postmaster, ran a ferry across the river. A smelting plant in Toston from 1883-1899 made the town a hub of activity, with ore coming in from
Radersburg
and coal from around Big Springs. Today, Toston provides ready access to the Missouri. The stretch of river between Three Forks and Townsend has become popular as anglers have discovered the area's exceptionally large trout. The
Lewis and Clark Expedition
made nine camps on the short stretch of river between the
Toston Dam
and the south end of
Canyon Ferry Reservoir
. The Toston Dam Recreation Site, five miles south of Toston, has seven campsites and is an excellent spot to picnic, camp or boat while traveling the Missouri.
