Welcome to Vaughn, Montana

Less than ten miles from Great Falls, Vaughn offers the feel of a rural community populated by farmers and ranchers within a few minutes from the amenities and urban attractions of Central Montana's largest city. The Sun River runs through Vaughn on its way to the Missouri and there are several fishing access sites near town. Vaughn is not far from the First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park, one of the longest buffalo jumps in the United States. Although not on the Lewis and Clark Trail, Captain Lewis described the use of such jumps in detail, and the State Park's education center and interpretive trail helps visitors understand this historic site. Northeast of Vaughn lies Benton Lake National Wildlife Refuge. The shallow lake is situated in a basin left by the last glacier in the area and covers five thousand acres. The refuge supports a variety of wildlife and migratory waterfowl. Freezout Lake Wildlife Management Area is northwest of Vaughn between Fairfield and Choteau. Freezout is known for significant snowgoose and tundra swan migrations in spring and fall.
