If you're looking to escape people by going into the vast open prairies of Montana, Winnett may very well be the place for you since it’s the least populous county in Montana. The town serves as county seat for the approximate five hundred people who call Petroleum County home. Winnett is full of history and personality that you can learn from on the Winnett Historic Walking Tour.
Winnett has a couple of bars and a café, well known for its mouth-watering pies and home cooking. There are a few lodging options but camping is a great way to enjoy the area and even experience the dark skies of Montana with incredible stargazing. The Lewis & Clark Adventure Trail runs through Winnett, making a great drive for the family or a fun ride for bike enthusiasts as you trace history.
The real draw of Petroleum County, is the land. Deer, elk and antelope abound in the fields around Winnett, making for some great hunting as well as wildlife watching. In addition, the area offers good fishing at Petrolia and Yellow Water Reservoirs. Also, be sure to check out the James Kipp Recreation Area and the War Horse National Wildlife Refuge.
