Butte began as a collection of small mining claims, becoming a large and booming mining center during the 1900s. Butte has been described as The Richest Hill on Earth for over 100 years, due to the vast wealth of valuable ores lying beneath the surface. Today, Butte is a city in transition to a more diversified economy, including energy research, education, medicine, transportation, tourism and environmental technology.
For those interested in Montana mining history, a visit to Butte is a must. There is The Mineral Museum on the Montana Tech campus and a visitor's center at the Berkeley Pit. In addition, Butte offers other fun historical attractions to help visitors learn about the city's background. Take a tour of historic Butte, view the authentically preserved Copper King Mansion and much, much more in one of the country's largest National Historic Landmark Districts.
The Butte Chamber Visitor and Transportation Center provides travel information for the entire state. Trolley tours of Butte leave from the building and a walking trail is just outside the door.
Spectacular mountain country surrounds Butte. You can enjoy fishing, climbing, hiking, mountain biking, camping in the spring, summer and fall. During the winter months, you may want to make Butte your base for trips to area ski resorts, snowmobile touring or cross-country skiing. And within just a few miles of Butte, neighboring towns offer additional points of interest.
Spring, summer, winter or fall, Butte is ideally situated to accommodate your transportation requirements. Butte is the north-south and east-west crossroads for Interstates 15 and 90. Greyhound and Rimrock Lines provide bus service on a regular basis to Butte from all points. The Bert Mooney Airport allows easy access for air travelers.
